The city of Rutland is the third largest city in Vermont, after South Burlington and Burlington. It is surrounded by the town of Rutland and is the seat of Rutland County. The downtown area of the city of Rutland is a historic district and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1800’s Rutland was one of the world’s leading marble producers, mostly attributed to their excellent railroad system. In 1903, the Vermont Supreme Court came to a decision establishing protection for the carrying of firearms without a license or permit. This became known as the “Vermont Carry.”

Major employers in Rutland include General Electric Aircraft Engines, Green Mountain Power and Rutland Regional Medical Center. The Regional Medical Center is the second largest health facility in Vermont. Many events take place in Rutland, such as Art in The Park, Friday Night Live, The Summer Concert Series, The Vermont State Fair and The Ethnic Festival. The city is home to the College of St. Joseph and the Community College of Vermont. The city’s Pulitzer prize winning paper is the Daily Rutland Herald and is widely circulated. The downtown section contains the Merchant’s Row which is a mid 19th century restored street, as well as the Rutland Free Library and Paramount Theatre.
