    The city of Rutland is the third largest city in Vermont, after South Burlington and Burlington. It is surrounded by the town of Rutland and is the seat of Rutland County. The downtown area of the city of Rutland is a historic district and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1800’s Rutland was one of the world’s leading marble producers, mostly attributed to their excellent railroad system.
