Danbury is a city in the state of Connecticut which is about 70 miles away from New York City. Danbury is located in Fairfield County. It is the fourth most populous city in Fairfield County. It is also the seventh most populous city in Connecticut. Danbury is within the New York metropolitan area and got its name from Danbury, England. It is nicknamed the Hat City. It’s nicknamed this because of its history in the hat industry.
In 1780, is when the first hat shop in Danbury was established. It was established by Zadoc Benedict. There were 3 employees and about 18 hats were made weekly. By 1800 is when Danbury was producing 20,000 hats every year, which was more than anywhere in the United States. Once the fur felt hat came back into style for men, by 1859 the hat production had risen to about 1.5 million yearly. By 1887, there were thirty different factories that were producing about 5 million hats per year. Around this time fur processing was separated from hat manufacturing. Once the P. Robinson Fur Cutting Company factory began operation in 1884. In 1892, the hat industry was revolutionized, when the large hat factories started to shift to only make hat bodies and then supplying them to smaller hat shops to finish them. Since Danbury produced about 24 percent of America’s hats in 1904, the city had supplied the industry with about 75 percent of its hat bodies. When the hat industry in Danbury, became known as the “Hat City” and the “Hatting Capitol of the World” is when it became the turn of the century and was a heyday. After World War II people went hatless and the city’s major hat factory, which was owned by Stetson ended up closing in 1964. The last hat in Danbury that was made was in 1987 when the small factory that was also owned by Stetson closed down.
