What is regulated medical waste?

Regulated medical waste, or RMW, is a byproduct of medical and research facilities that provide treatment and conduct research and biological production. RMWs can include blood and blood components, infectious animal waste, culture stocks and other microbiological materials, tissue, organs and body parts. Medical tools and equipment can also be considered RMWs. These sharps include surgical blades, needles, syringes and broken glass.

What is an RMW generator?

An RMW generator, refers to any institution that produces regulated medical waste, which includes hospitals, medical, dental and veterinary clinics, prisons and laboratories. RMW generators must follow specific guidelines in the disposal, storage and transport of RMW.

What are medical waste generators responsibilities?

RMW generators are responsible for packaging and labeling RMW. They must follow certain procedures for storing waste on site and securing it for transport to off-site facilities. RMW generators must also fill out an approved MWTF, or Medical Waste Tracking Form. All personnel involved in the disposal and storage of RMWs must be properly trained according to standards set by OSHA. RMW generators must also treat waste to eliminate any disease causing organisms. This can include incineration and chemical disinfection. Sharps must also be destroyed before disposal.

What is the proper way to store medical waste on site?

Storage of RMWs on-site include properly and securely packaging all materials. Storing of RMWs is limited to a designated low-traffic area of the facility away from food and medical supplies, accessible only by authorized employees. RMWs must be refrigerated if there is the risk of putrefaction. Proper labeling includes prominent placement of the universal biohazard symbol as well as written warnings. RMWs should not be allowed to commingle with solid wastes.

What are New York State’s disposal requirements?

Disposing of RMWs in New York State requires a permit. RMWs must be properly treated, packaged, labeled and stored prior to medical waste disposal. Treated RMW in NY must be accompanied by a certificate of treatment form and disposed of at an authorized facility.
